Climb Mount Sinai and arrive at where Prophet Moses had gained the Ten Commandments. It is a place God Almighty appeared in to inform the Prophet of the commandments.

Allah asked the prophet Moses to take off his shoes, going ahead to this holy spot to listen to the Ten Commandments.

So, this Mount Sinai is holy to Christians, Muslims and Jews.

This mountain is located in the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt.

So, through these holy steps where Moses went, go ahead to the peak and look around you. The views of the sky while running above the mountains’ peak are breathtaking.

Where is Mount Sinai located?

Mount Sinai is located 447 km from Cairo, the capital of Egypt. So the road takes around 5.30 by vehicle.

The mountain is in the city of Saint Catherine, next to Mount Catherine, in the South Sinai governorate region.

How Can I Arrive at Moses Mountain?!

You can take a day tour to Moses Mountain, also called “Jabal Moses,” from Dahab (1 hour and 44 minutes), Sharm El Sheikh (2 hours and 28 minutes), Hurghada (9 hours), and Luxor (11 hours).

How high is Mount Sinai?

This sacred mountain is 2,285 meters high, and you can climb it in 2 ways, whether the Camel Trail or the Steps of Repentance.

Both trails meet about 300 m below the summit of the mountain, called Elijah’s Basin.

From this point, you need to take 750 rocky and uneven steps to the top, where there is a small chapel and a mosque; however, both the chapel and the mosque are locked.

Hiking to Moses Mountain by the Camel Trail

This is the first path and the easiest route up to the peak. Just walk along the northern wall of St. Catherine’s Monastery.

The trail is wide, clear, and slopes gently, taking 2 hours to arrive at the summit.

Most hikers walk up, but there is a choice to hire a camel at the base, behind the monastery, arriving at Elijah’s Basin.

On the camel trail, you find a lot of kiosks on the way up to take a break and have water, tea, coffee or some snacks.

Hiking to Moses Mountain by the Steps of Repentance

The other path to the summit is the Steps of Repentance, beginning from the monastery car park.

It starts outside the southeastern corner of the monastery compound. The road consists of 3000 up to Elijah’s Basin and then the final 750 to the summit.

These steps are roughly hewn rock and are steep and uneven in many places, which requires a person with high fitness.

As long as you climb, the stunning mountain scenery and the lower reaches of the trail afford impressive views of the monastery along this way, though, making this path well worth the extra effort.
