Why is the temple of Edfu important?!
Edfu Temple is the most ideal place to live amid the Pharaonic civilization, not just see it. It is the opportunity to visit the all-ruined pharaonic temples around Egypt, but when they had just been built by the pharaonic hands. So, you will see all the magic, architectural genius, and creativity of inscriptions when they have just been placed on the earth.
Edfu Temple History
It was built from 237–57 BCE, and dedicated to the falcon god, Horus.
Edfu Temple Architecture and Edfu Temple From Inside
The temple includes the mamisi. It is the house of divine birth, situated to the west of the main entrance of the temple. It is decorated with colorful carvings showing the story of the divine birth of Horus, the child, in the presence of the goddess Hathor, the god Khenoum, and other deities who were concerned with pregnancy and birth.
Beyond the mamisi is the massive pylon. It is one of the best-surviving pylons among Egypt’s temples today, decorated with battle scenes, representing King Ptolemy VIII smiting his enemies before the god Horus.
There is an open courtyard of offerings surrounded on three sides by 32 columns with floral capitals.
There, you will witness the place where the pharaohs could give their offerings to the god.
Then, the hypostyle hall is rectangular with 12 columns where the statue of Horus is situated, and then the outer hypostyle hall.
Beyond the 1st Hypostyle Hall is the Inner Hypostyle Hall, with 12 columns. On the left, there are two chambers.
Here, all the necessary perfumes and incense recipes were carefully brewed and stored, with their ingredients listed on the walls.
At the end of the Edfu Temple, there is the Horus sanctuary, which includes a polished granite shrine where a gold statue of the god is located.
In front of the dais, there is a resting pedestal for the wooden divine boat. Horus’ statue would be taken out of the temple in procession during festive occasions.
Still, wonders are waiting for you in the Edfu Temple architecture.
