The Grand Egyptian Museum Opening – Egypt Welcomes the World
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) has finally chosen and announced its opening time! What Can Visitors Expect from the Largest Museum Dedicated to One Civilization?
Mark your calendar for July 3, 2025 📅 — the day the Grand Egyptian Museum officially opens its doors. It’s your chance to meet face-to-face the full collection of Tutankhamun with more than 5,000 pieces of treasure and Khufu’s Solar Boat. These remarkable artifacts will be unveiled to the public only upon the official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum.
In a historical district located 2 kilometers from the Giza Pyramids, in the heart of the Old Kingdom civilization area, the Pyramid Building era, you can see the fourth pyramid.
Yes, the Grand Egyptian Museum’s architecture is inspired by the Giza Pyramids themselves, designed by Heneghan Peng Architects, chosen in the competition of 2003.
This competition attracted 1,557 entries from 83 countries, making it one of the largest architectural competitions in history.
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) from Inside
Upon entering this pyramid-inspired structure, you’ll pass beneath the world’s only Hanging Obelisk of Hatshepsut to see how its base looks for the first time.
Proceed to the giant alabaster façade at the entrance, which features a massive statue of Ramses II that is 11 meters (36 feet) tall and weighs around 83 tons and dates back to the 19th Dynasty (circa 1279–1213 BCE), approximately 3200 years ago.
Leave the dazzlement of Ramses the Great and go up to the giant staircase, where you discover that even the staircase in the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is teeming with unique artifacts, including around 60 pieces.
Go up, with the accompaniment of these artifacts. You will realize at this time that the GEM is aligned with the Great Pyramid of Khufu, amazingly, as per the design that creates a visual connection to Egypt’s ancient heritage.
You will be amid 12 expansive galleries teeming with more than 100,000 artifacts, making it the world’s largest archaeological museum dedicated to a single civilization, with a total site area of approximately 480,000 square meters (about 119 acres).
These display halls show history since prehistoric times, the Archaic Period (First and Second Dynasties), the Old Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom, the New Kingdom, and up to Greek and Roman times.
These galleries are divided into daily life, culture and religious beliefs, royal items, kings’ and queens’ statues, great persons’ statues, statues of gods and goddesses, and afterlife world artifacts and treasure.
