Sultan Hassan Mosque or Madrasa, is called a jewel of historical Islamic architecture in the Middle East, where the precious, vibrant decorations overlap in a unique, dazzling mix that appears charmingly, offering a giant historical piece of priceless art. 

Between 1356 and 1362 AD, the Mamluk sultan Hasan ibn al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun constructed the Sultan Hassan Mosque, which features stunning Mamluk architecture.

Once entering the mosque, you will meet the dazzlement of this majestic open courtyard with a fountain in its center. Four iwans (rectangular spaces that are open on one side) surround the courtyard. 

Four madrasas, “schools and educational institutions,”  are accessible through doorways at the courtyard’s four corners.

Each school consists of a court and iwan, in addition to the rooms of the students and annexed service units; actually, you will live the great history of these schools and majestic historical mosques amid dazzling precious decorations.

While wandering amid the mosque, you will also meet two giant minarets built in the Mamluk style. Sultan Hassan Mosque Architecture

This rare historical building of vibrant, rich Mamluk decorations combines strength and splendor, elegance and beauty, as well as a multiplicity of decoration. 

How amazement you will feel when crossing through the principal, northern façade that extends to about 145 m in length and reaches a height of 38 m. 

It is decorated with various kinds of stone and marble, and it culminates at the top with a magnificent cornice made up of nine tiers of tiny muqarnas that have a honeycomb-like appearance. 

This giant façade includes a towering portal, which is considered among the most imposing entrances to an Islamic building in Egypt, which has an arched ceiling that is a semi-dome decorated charmingly with muqarnas tiers.

Then to go inside this giant mosque with its four schools and details of majestic decorations. 

The iwan of the mosque takes the shape of an arch and includes a number of splendors of Islamic art, for its walls are paneled with colored stone and marble, the upper parts of which boast a band of stucco decoration that consists of a unique inscription called Kufic script representing Qur'anic verses on a floriated background, the style of which is rarely seen. 

The iwan also consists of a decorated mihrab ornamented with polychrome marble and gilded inscriptions, considered to be one of the most beautiful mihrabs in Egypt.
